In 1993, BlackRock invented the target date fund to help people meet the challenge of managing their investments across their lifetime. Twenty-five years later, we are still focused on helping people build for retirement.
But the job is far more complex than it was in 1993. Work has changed. The markets have changed.
Even people have changed and are living longer. And we don’t want to keep up with change – we want to stay ahead of it. That’s why BlackRock hasn’t stopped reinventing the target date fund for 25 years.
For us, it starts with research into how people earn, spend and save in the real world. We study behavior to understand how to help keep people saving despite the market’s ups and downs. We build tools and portfolios to help people navigate retirement spending with confidence.
Finally, we invest in technology to help us harness the power of data for insights and opportunities that were beyond the reach of most investors in 1993. So what does twenty-five years of re-inventing the target date fund mean for our clients? It means that they have a choice of LifePath strategies, each built on a foundation of research and experience.
Whether it’s broad, diversified market exposure through efficient indexes…or innovative target date funds incorporating smart beta, factor or sustainable investing insights…LifePath funds are designed to tackle today’s retirement challenge. And tomorrow's.
So yes, we’re proud of our history. But we’re more excited about the next twenty-five years, and the twenty-five beyond that. We remain committed to keep re-inventing the target date fund with the same goal we have when we began: Making it simple for people of every age to save for the retirement they want.
